We had given up on Hereford cattle at our place until a friend
found an old polled Hereford bull called CO2 owned by Teddy Gentry of Alabama
Band fame in Fort Payne, Alabama. Knowing we could not bring a southern bull up
to our high selenium area and use him the first year if he could tolerate the
selenium, we chose to AI to a limited number of our best cows.
The cattle have more white on them than the Herefords in this
area. They do have moderate birth weights. Their carcass data is almost
as good, with the steers hanging in the 60-63% range. Teddy has done shear
force testing and the bull is genetically tender. Our carcass data has been
tender. They have much better udders than what we had before. They have
good dispositions and good mothering ability. Because the bull was heterozygous
polled, using them on our horned cows is giving us mostly horned bulls at this
time. They have a dark curly coat and good fertility and libido.
We have about 60 head of straight bred cows that we are breeding
Hereford. The base of our Hereford cows is from Knippling Brothers old
Navigator 212X bull. Those cattle were moderate in all traits. Our cattle are
genetically all similar with their linebred background.
Come see these different Hereford cattle. We were really
pleased that Anibol Pordomingo, the Argentinean grass finishing consultant,
really liked these Herefords along with the IB cattle.
We would be happy to show you cattle, please call to set up a time with Larry.
